How does laser hair removal work?

At Medicina Volovec, we use a medical Fotona Nd:YAG laser for laser hair removal, enabling precise and safe treatment of different areas of the face and body.

The laser light is selectively absorbed by melanin in the hair and converted into heat. This heat is transferred to the hair follicle, damaging it and thereby inhibiting or preventing further hair growth while preserving the surrounding skin as much as possible.

The laser is most effective on hairs in the active growth phase, which is why a series of treatments is required for long-term hair reduction.

About the procedure

Before starting treatment, we assess your skin type and the colour, thickness and density of the hair and adjust the laser parameters accordingly.

The procedure is quick, with treatment time depending on the size of the area – from just a few minutes for smaller areas to approximately 30–45 minutes for larger areas, such as the legs.

During treatment, you may experience warmth, a stinging sensation or brief discomfort, particularly in more sensitive areas such as the bikini area. Effective skin cooling helps minimise discomfort.

Following treatment, mild redness and slight swelling around the hair follicles may occur and generally subside quickly. You can usually return to your normal daily activities immediately.

How many treatments are needed?

As the laser works most effectively on hairs in the active growth phase, a single treatment cannot target all hairs.

For optimal results, approximately 6–10 treatments are usually required. The number of sessions and the intervals between them are tailored individually. Results depend on the treatment area, hair density, thickness and colour, skin type and hormonal factors.

After completing a course of treatments, hair growth is significantly reduced in the long term, while any remaining hairs are generally finer and sparser. Due to hormonal changes and natural hair growth cycles, occasional maintenance treatments may be required over time.

How should you prepare for treatment?

Ideally, the hairs should be short and visible, approximately 2–3 mm in length, at the time of treatment.

Before and throughout the treatment course, do not remove hairs with tweezers, wax or an epilator, as the hair follicle needs to remain intact for the laser to work effectively.

Laser hair removal can be performed throughout the year, provided that the instructions regarding sun exposure and skin protection before and after treatment are followed.
