What is stress urinary incontinence?
Stress urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine when pressure within the abdomen increases, for example when coughing, sneezing, laughing, running, exercising, climbing stairs or lifting heavy objects.
It occurs more frequently after pregnancy and childbirth, during menopause and with ageing, when changes occur in the pelvic floor muscles, supporting structures and connective tissue.
Although it is a common condition, many women find it difficult to talk about. It is important to know that different treatment options are available and are selected according to the type and severity of symptoms.
How does laser therapy work?
For laser treatment, we use the Fotona Er:YAG laser with SMOOTH® technology. Controlled laser energy delivers a thermal effect to the vaginal tissue, stimulating the remodelling of existing collagen and the production of new collagen.
The aim is to improve the quality and firmness of the supporting tissues around the vagina and urethra and, in appropriately selected patients, help reduce the symptoms of stress urinary incontinence.
About the procedure
Laser therapy is primarily intended for women with mild to moderate symptoms of stress urinary incontinence.
Treatment therefore always begins with a consultation with a gynaecologist and a gynaecological examination.
If the examination confirms that laser treatment is appropriate, we perform an outpatient procedure lasting approximately 30 minutes.
The procedure involves no surgical incisions, stitches or bleeding, and anaesthesia is generally not required. During treatment, you may mainly feel warmth or mild discomfort.
The procedure is performed in a private and comfortable environment, and you can return home afterwards.
How many treatments are needed?
The effect develops gradually, as collagen regeneration and remodelling take place following the treatment.
We usually recommend 2–3 treatments. The final number of sessions and the interval between them are adjusted according to the individual condition, severity of symptoms and response to treatment.
Fotona SMOOTH® – laser technology in gynaecology
Fotona SMOOTH® is a special non-ablative Er:YAG laser technology developed for use in gynaecology as well. It enables the precise and controlled delivery of thermal energy to the tissue without surgical incisions, while stimulating collagen remodelling processes.
At Medicina Volovec, we have been performing gynaecological laser procedures since 2016, while we have been using Fotona laser systems since 2006. Our many years of experience allow us to take an individual approach and carefully assess which treatment is most appropriate for each patient.
After the procedure
A prolonged recovery period is generally not required after laser treatment. We recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity for approximately two days and refraining from sexual intercourse for approximately one week, or as advised by your gynaecologist.
Before leaving, you will receive clear, individual instructions regarding activities after the procedure and further treatment.
